Wi-Fi 7 Routers Explained: Do You Need to Upgrade?

Written by

in

Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) is the newest standard. Here is when it is worth it.

What is new

  • Wider channels up to 320 MHz on 6 GHz for higher peak speed
  • Multi-Link Operation (MLO) uses several bands at once for lower latency
  • Better handling of many devices in busy offices

Reality check

  • Your devices need Wi-Fi 7 too to get the benefit
  • 6 GHz range is shorter through walls
  • A fast internet plan and wired backbone matter more

Upgrade if

You have many users, video calls, large file transfers, or new Wi-Fi 7 laptops. Otherwise a good Wi-Fi 6 or 6E setup is fine.

For offices, access points with proper site design beat a single router. See our new office IT setup service.
